The Center for the Arts at Towson University was awarded a Merit Award from AIA Maryland, the fifth design award Design Collective has received for this complex project. Merit awards recognize projects that clearly demonstrate a level of design that exemplifies superior achievements.
The Center for the Arts project involved a comprehensive renovation to the existing, circa-1972 facility (166,000 GSF), and expansions that involved three additions (134,000 GSF). Towson University now has a new, four-story 300,850 GSF center that unites its visual and performing arts programs under one roof. Through a complex phasing plan, the design team delivered the completed building, which was continuously occupied throughout construction. The Center for the Arts was designed in joint venture with Wilson Butler Architects and constructed using the CM at Risk delivery method.
The AIA Maryland Design Awards competition occurs each year in August, with recognition of winning projects at the Design Awards Banquet in September. The Design Awards program aims to encourage and recognize distinguished architectural achievement and focus public attention on the Architect’s role in shaping the quality of life through design excellence.
