School is in session at West Towson Elementary School, the newest school in the Baltimore County Public School system. Design Collective conducted an extensive feasibility study to determine the best site for construction and then provided design services for the new $22 million elementary school. This 69,300 sf three story building is registered to achieve LEED Silver certification and was designed to accommodate 451 students to alleviate overcrowding in Towson area schools. The new learning center includes one pre-K classroom, three kindergarten classrooms, three classrooms for each grade – 1 through 5 – a special education room, science room, art room, media center, computer lab, combined gymnasium/cafeteria, and administrative and support spaces. An accessible green roof also doubles as an outdoor classroom for active learning.
