Design Collective Helps Locust Point Prepare for Sailabration 2012 - Baltimore, MD

Design Collective is working with the Locust Point Civic Association (LPCA) to develop design guidelines and a streetscape improvement plan for Fort Avenue, the main roadway leading to historic Fort McHenry. This effort is of particular importance as Fort McHenry and the City of Baltimore prepare to host A Star-Spangled Sailabration, the national launch of the bicentennial commemoration for the War of 1812. Working with the LPCA, Design Collective’s Landscape and Graphic Design team has been working diligently to create a cohesive streetscape along Fort Avenue that will enhance the visitor experience and accentuate some of the neighborhood’s quaint attributes including Latrobe Park, which was designed by renowned landscape designer, Frederick Law Olmsted. Working with LPCA sub-committees, stakeholders and business leaders including Under Armour and Cross Street Partners, Design Collective developed a unified scheme of hardscape and signage components along Fort Avenue; defined gateways and thresholds into the community; and established streetscape guidelines for new development in Locust Point. First phase improvements include new signage, community banners and street graphics as well as new plantings, benches and restoration of Latrobe Park’s street edge and main entrance. Graphic Designer, Tim Sullivan, said “We’re ecstatic to be part of this project that will celebrate the history of the Locust Point community and the nation.” The first phase of improvements are expected to be completed in time to welcome thousands of visitors and more than 40 tall ships and naval vessels that will sail into Baltimore’s Inner Harbor from June 13-19.
