Lyndhurst Elementary School, located on Wildwood Parkway, was originally constructed in 1926, with later additions in 1951 and 1980. Among the graduates of the school are U.S. Congressman Elijah Cummings, and former Mayor of the City of Baltimore, Governor, and Maryland State Comptroller, William Donald Schaefer. The building is currently 50,728 square feet serving as a PK-5 school. Under the City Schools 10 Year Renewal Plan, Lyndhurst would be expanded to a PK-8 school and receive the students from the closure of Rognel Heights Elementary and Middle School.
Design Collective, Inc. was retained by BCPSS to lead a public process to develop both an Education Specification and a Feasibility Study for the project. The process included community meetings with hands on activities allowing the community to engage with the design team and express their priorities for the school. The result of the study indicated an expansion to approximate 106,000 square feet with alternatives to renovate and add to the existing building or build an entirely new facility on the site.
