In 2009, Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) selected Design Collective to design its new Science and General Office Building. Given the positive response to initial design concepts, WSSU secured additional funding to nearly double the gross square footage (GSF) of the building and accommodate the University’s Biomedical Research Infrastructure Center, plus additional research lab spaces for Chemistry, Life Sciences and Clinical Lab Sciences. The new building will also house lecture halls, classrooms, traditional and investigational lab spaces and a small animal facility for students engaged in the study and research of chemistry, life science and clinical lab sciences. A central atrium and lounge will put science on display, engaging faculty, students and visitors in WSSU’s mission of educating future scientists. The 210,000 GSF Science and General Office Building will be a state-of-the-art and environmentally sensitive facility, as demonstrated by its goal to be the first science building on campus to achieve LEED Silver certification. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2013.
