The University of Maryland School of Medicine and the UM Marlene & Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center engaged Design Collective to renovate 1,100 SF of space immediately adjacent to the hospital for the purpose of providing a state of the art cGMP facility (current Good Manufacturing Process) in which cancer cell and vaccine processing can occur. The clean room suite consists of four ISO level 7 class 10,000 spaces; two production labs flanked on each side by a pre-processing and post-processing room. Design Collective met the challenge of inserting a space with highly sensitive and robust air cleanliness requirements into an existing shell by implementing a modular PVC coated panel system; essentially creating a 'box within a box' and recirculating the house conditioned air through a class 10,000 plenum over each space via HEPA fan units. Design Collective detailed seamless wall, floor, and ceiling surfaces while minimizing ledges and corners through the use of coved and radius trim kits and specifying flush mounted devices to provide the highest possible level of surface cleanliness. Mobile stainless steel work surfaces and table top equipment ensure that the facility will stay on the cutting edge of cancer treatment well into the future.
