A state-of-the-art biomedical research building that significantly increases laboratory space and paves the way for breakthroughs in basic science, disease prevention and treatment.

The University of Maryland Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy share the Health Sciences Facility II, a state-of-the-art biomedical research building that significantly increases laboratory space and paves the way for breakthroughs in basic science, disease prevention and treatment. The facility is attached to the existing HSF I, and extends a full city block. HSF II adds more than 191,319 SF of research, office and meeting space, enabling the School of Medicine to expand its world-renowned programs to fight infectious diseases and develop lifesaving vaccines.

The School of Medicine occupies the first four floors of the facility as a biomedical research facility. A 6,000 SF BL-3 laboratory provides research through an NIH grant. A research NMR suite is located in the basement. The School of Pharmacy is located on the two upper levels, allowing the exhaust from the research hoods to be efficiently located just below the mechanical systems in the penthouse. The facility is organized into 3 distinctive volumes: two brick volumes contain the labs and research spaces, and a curved limestone rectangle provides public meeting space, offices and circulation while connecting a new main entrance to the existing HSF I. These building blocks are the direct result of the design teams urban planning strategy, i.e. extending the existing lawn of HSF I and to create an entry plaza at the corner of Lombard and Penn Streets.
